There are 57 algorithms for orienting the last layer in a single step. The scenarios and their numbering scheme are somewhat random and not grouped logically, though similar algorithms are often found together. To produce order from this chaos, each OLL scenario includes the shape class, derived from the pattern produced by oriented last layer pieces on the U side, a description of the edges, and a description of the corners.
Edges are in one of eight possible configurations, and reference a clock face: unsolved, L (12 and 3), L (3 and 6), L (6 and 9), L (9 and 12), I-shape (3 and 9), I-shape (6 and 12), and cross. The acronym OCLL, orient corners of last layer, refers to the cross scenarios, when the four edges are already oriented.
Corners are in one of eight possible configurations: Sune, Antisune, H, L, Pi, T, U and solved. The standard 1-look OLL scenarios don’t use consistent corner orientations. The descriptions below clarify the orientation when necessary, e.g., Sune + y2 or T headlights left.
Identifying a 1-look OLL scenario typically consists of identifying the U side shape, then orienting it correctly based on the pattern of pairs, bars, and headlights found around the top edges of the sides. The descriptions below include these additional orientation hints.
